Summary

This philanthropic initiative is dedicated to advancing research, teaching, and learning environments through collaboration with libraries, archives, cultural institutions, and higher-education communities. It supports eligible organizations in the United States and Canada in efforts centered on preservation, access, and digitization of unique cultural and scholarly materials.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit academic, independent, and community-based organizations, as well as government units (federal, state, provincial, territorial, municipal, tribal, or indigenous) that hold collections of rare and unique materials and are committed to making those materials accessible to the public. Projects may encompass digitization of analog or special‐format media, creation of public‐access metadata, and support for public use of the digitized content.

Funding amounts vary by program. For one major cycle, awards ranged from $50,000 USD to $300,000 USD for projects scheduled to begin January 1, 2027. Another program accepts requests from $10,000 USD up to $60,000 USD per project for preservation of audio or audiovisual materials. Projects may last 12–36 months and must follow specific terms regarding metadata licensing and public-domain dedication.

Applicants benefit from the opportunity to undertake meaningful preservation projects that increase availability of hidden or under-represented cultural content, develop institutional capacity for digital access, and deepen public knowledge of previously marginalized or less-visible historical materials. Collaborative partnerships and sustainable planning are emphasized. Projects are expected to align with core values such as public knowledge, broad representation, authentic partnerships, sustainable infrastructure, and community-centered access.

Organizations are encouraged to review the current competition guidelines for their specific area of interest, ensure eligibility, and prepare applications in line with the requirements for metadata licensing, rights management, project timelines, and budget documentation.
